Russell Bisset and David Bishop (pictured left, respectively) shared a passion to produce a range of craft beers .This dream led to the formation in 2013 of the microbrewery company, Northern Monk Brew Co.
The founders chose the word Northern in the company name for its association with honest, earthy produce.
The company, based in Bradford, is set to launch a range of hand crafted beers with quality and taste at the heart of its development and production – starting with their debut ale, New World IPA (pictured far left).
The owners recognise the importance of international expansion to a new business startup.
The Rising Stars Business Support Programme has supported the company by providing one to one business advice, specifically related to starting up a high growth business.
The key areas supported included business planning, legal structures and financing a startup.
Mr Bisset is particularly adept at recognising the importance of his brand having had a successful International Sales & Marketing career and has a wealth of contacts in the trade both locally and internationally.
The business has now been launched and the first product, New World IPA, went to market this summer with a successful launch event at The Sparrow.
Success of the business has derived from the founder’s progressive, bold, British, Bradfordian craft beer which will in time have the opportunity to become a quintessentially British drink
For me, Rising Stars have helped my dreams to become reality. Dedication, motivation, inspiration and vision are all essential qualities and attributes one needs to have as an entrepreneur but they are meaningless without everything that lays the foundations for a small business to become a reality – a concise, structured and solid business plan, an understanding of the legal implications of what it is you are setting out to do and the financial set up and accountancy involved in the infancy of the business.
As a business with a pro-Bradford agenda it has also been hugely beneficial to hear of the support being offered by other initiatives backed by Bradford Council as well as other private companies who may wish to collaborate.
If you are thinking of starting a business, in many ways now is a great time – there is a lot of help and resource available to you, you just have to seek it out. The Rising Stars programme is a shining example of this.

Sharp Cutters Ltd has been manufacturing specialist cutting dies for board, plastics and textiles since 1985. These dies are used by print and packaging firms across Yorkshire to cut sophisticated packaging and point of display containers. The firm is owned today by Tony Sterlacchini and Harry Lingard.
Recent investment in renewable energies and a brand new state-of-the-art cutting machine has increased the firm’s capacity and turn-around capabilities.
Rising Stars business adviser Paul Clarke helped Harry and Tony to develop a simple marketing plan and encouraged them to spread the word on their new investments.
Without an in-house marketing department, the firm opted to engage the services of local telemarketing company Tandem.
Rising Stars helped Sharp Cutters to define their target markets and plan a four week schedule of activity. This included producing letters for existing customers as well as building a database of new prospects.
The letters were sent to a targeted list of prospective clients followed up one week later with a phone call to gauge feedback.
Tandem also called existing clients to build up a bank of testimonials that the company can use for future marketing materials. Paul Clarke helped to develop the script and the follow-up by the firm.
Results & Feedback
The team at Tandem were extremely professional and took the time to find out precisely what Sharp Cutters is all about. They worked closely with our Rising Stars adviser, Paul Clarke, to define our target market and develop a successful closing sales pitch. The person responsible for making the follow-up calls was also brought down to see the factory so that they could get a good understanding too. It was really very thorough.
So far, the campaign is working on several different levels. Not only are we able to develop our own database of contacts and potential clients, we are also ensuring our name remains out in the market place. The feedback from the calls also allows us to tailor our offer and understand the needs of our customers better for the future of our business.
